Yiye Ávila (1925–2013), born José Joaquín Ávila Portalatín in Camuy, Puerto Rico, was a renowned Pentecostal evangelist, author, and Christian broadcaster whose ministry influenced generations across the Spanish-speaking world. Before entering full-time ministry, he spent more than two decades teaching science and distinguished himself as an athlete, earning the title of Mr. Puerto Rico in 1952. Following a profound spiritual experience during a period of illness, he dedicated his life to evangelism in 1967, proclaiming the message of salvation, prayer, holiness, and the return of Jesus Christ.
In 1972, Ávila established the Cristo Viene ministry, launching evangelistic campaigns that extended throughout Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the United States. His passionate preaching and emphasis on spiritual preparation became defining characteristics of his ministry. Recognizing the power of Christian media, he founded Cadena del Milagro in 1988, expanding his message through television and radio broadcasts that reached audiences across international borders. He also authored influential works on prayer, fasting, faith, and biblical teaching.
Beyond his public ministry, Ávila was remembered for his humility, compassion, and personal dedication to prayer and Scripture. His teachings encouraged countless believers to deepen their relationship with Christ and remain steadfast in their faith. Following his passing in June 2013, his legacy continues through the Cristo Viene ministry, Cadena del Milagro, and the preservation of his books and recorded messages. His life remains a lasting testimony to the power of evangelism and an unwavering commitment to proclaiming the Gospel.
